Charoite is a rare, vibrant violet silicate mineral found exclusively along the Chara River in Siberia, Russia. Renowned for its distinctive swirling patterns of lavender, black, and white, it is often called a "Stone of Transformation" in metaphysical circles. It is highly prized by collectors for its chatoyant (cat's-eye) lustre.
Key Characteristics
- Colour: Ranging from deep royal purple to lilac and pale violet.
- Inclusions: Commonly swirled with black Aegirine, translucent Quartz, and white Feldspar.
- Hardness: 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, making it relatively durable for jewellery but best suited for cabochons and pendants.
- Rarity: It occurs globally in only one region — the Murun Massif in Eastern Siberia, making high-quality raw material quite scarce.
