Goodletite – New Zealand Ruby Rock Hand Carved Pendant with .925 Sterling Silver Clasp Ref: 0066
One of Earth's Rarest Gemstones — Found Only in New Zealand
Goodletite, famously known as New Zealand Ruby Rock, is an exceptionally rare gemstone found exclusively in the Hokitika region of New Zealand's South Island. Statistically rarer than diamonds, this extraordinary stone has never been found in its original "mother lode" — every known specimen has been recovered as a boulder from glacial moraines or riverbeds, making each piece a true geological mystery.
A Gemstone Unlike Any Other
Goodletite is a stunning natural fusion of:
- Vibrant green Fuchsite — a chromium-rich variety of muscovite mica, shimmering with an emerald brilliance
- Ruby and Sapphire crystals (corundum) — deep pink-to-red inclusions that create a breath taking contrast against the green matrix
- Dark Tourmaline needles — adding depth and drama to an already spectacular stone
The sharp visual contrast between the glittering green mica and the deep pink rubies creates an aesthetic unlike any other gemstone in the world.
A Piece of New Zealand's Natural Heritage
Identified in the late 1800s and named after William Goodlet, who first recognised the red stones within the rock as rubies, Goodletite has captivated gem hunters and collectors for over a century. Despite more than 100 years of searching, the "Mother Lode" — the original rock formation where Goodletite is born — has never been found. It remains the holy grail of New Zealand gem hunting.
"Goodletite is arguably one of the rarest ornamental stones on the planet. Its limited occurrence in the glacial moraines of Hokitika makes it a true 'collector's gemstone.' It may not be a faceted 5-carat ruby, but as a mineralogical specimen, its rarity far exceeds that of a standard diamond."
— Robert James, President, International School of Gemmology (ISG)
