New Zealand Aroha Stone Polished Display Slab (Large) Ref 0086
New Zealand Aroha Stone — Polished Display Slab (Large)
Aroha stone, also widely known as Piemontite Schist, is a unique and visually striking metamorphic rock found exclusively in New Zealand — particularly in the Otago and West Coast regions. The name derives from the Māori word for "love", reflecting the stone's vibrant pink to deep purple or burgundy coloration, often enhanced by shimmering mica.
This large polished display slab is a stunning collector specimen, showcasing the full depth of colour and sparkle that makes Aroha stone one of New Zealand's most prized natural treasures.
Key Characteristics
- Mineral Composition: Piemontite, a manganese-rich variety of epidote, giving the rock its signature red and pink hues, with mica for a magical shimmer and layers of white quartz.
- Hardness: 6.0–6.5 on the Mohs scale
- Colour Profile: Soft dusty pinks to intense burgundy and deep magenta, with a sparkly banded structure
- Geological Origin: High-pressure, high-temperature metamorphic rock formed approximately 160–200 million years ago
- Sourced From: Shotover River (Queenstown), Haast region, and Wanaka, Otago — South Island, New Zealand
Cultural & Metaphysical Significance
- Stone of Love: Locally known as the "stone of love" or Aroha stone — a symbol of unconditional love (aroha) in Māori culture
- Heart Chakra: Believed to open and activate the heart and crown chakras
- Healing Properties: Associated with compassion, emotional healing, self-love, and grounding — supporting those recovering from grief, trauma, or emotional imbalance
- Symbolism: Represents connection to the Earth (whenua) and the feminine energy of unconditional love
Rarity
While schist is common in New Zealand, the specific piemontite-bearing variety known as Aroha stone is much rarer and more localised — making each piece a genuinely unique find.
Each display slab is one-of-a-kind. Colours and patterns will vary.
