Pounamu Toki – Hand-Carved New Zealand Greenstone Adze 0006
A Sacred Taonga, Carved with Aroha
Pounamu – New Zealand greenstone – is one of Aotearoa's most treasured taonga (sacred treasures). Revered by Māori for centuries, it carries deep spiritual and cultural significance, embodying mana (prestige), wairua (spirit), and an unbreakable connection to whānau, tīpuna (ancestors), and the whenua (land).
The Toki – Symbol of Strength, Wisdom & Courage
This carving takes the form of the Toki Poutangata – the adze shape historically worn by people of authority and leadership. The Toki was used to carve waka (canoes) and craft ngā rākau riri a Tū (weapons of war), making it a powerful symbol of strength, wisdom, and courage.
Pounamu is traditionally gifted to signify love, friendship, or to seal important agreements – and its meaning deepens with every generation it is passed through.
Unique, Just Like You
Every piece of pounamu is one of a kind. Sourced from the rivers and mountains of Te Wai Pounamu (the South Island of New Zealand), no two stones share the same colour, pattern, or character.
Handcrafted from Start to Finish
This Toki has been lovingly created by a hobby carver working from home in New Zealand. Every step of the process is done by hand – from sourcing the raw stone, shaping and grinding, through to the final polish. What you receive is a truly personal, one-of-a-kind piece of New Zealand heritage.
